I'm trying to come up with a fun idea for a 4th anniversary gift for my husband. He's been trying to fix up our backyard which is very plain and I thought it'd be fun to get him a tree. I'd like one that produces beautiful flowers that would be able to survive the Houston climate. If it produces fruit too that would be fine but since the traditional 4th anniversary gift is flowers, that's what I was going for.

  1. Top 10 flowering trees for Houston. I agree with #1 the Crepe Myrtle. We have and they smell amazing! The Mexican plum tree flowers as well as makes fruit.

  2. i recommend the weeping willow tree, it is such a magnificent looking tree i have a few in my backyard and in my opion the willow trees are what make my yard look so great=] get the willow tree if you have any brains lol=] have a great week altho it doesn't produce flowers it's deff. worth it=]

  3. I recommend a plant that can help your daily living. For example a plant that you can eat in everyday like a tomato or potato etc.

  4. The easy answer is a Crape Myrtle.  They are common in Texas (I live in Austin), and are very pretty, hearty, drought torrent, and easy to find at local nurseries.  However, they are, like I said, very common and so not exactly an 'inspired' choice.

An obvious choice for a fruit tree would be a peach.  Again, not 'inspired', but you know it will flourish in our climate.

  5. Contact your nearest nursery, garden club, or agricultural extension agent for what flowers and grows best where you are.  That's a lovely idea!
