Question:

What type of truck or SUV should I buy?

I recently switched jobs and am driving a lot more. I had to buy my current vehicle (02 Land Rover Discovery) in December when I had knee trouble. But my husband is having trouble working on it, and parts are hard to come by. So, we're pretty well in agreement to sell it after I buy something else.

The thing is I'm not sure what to buy. It has to be 4WD, automatic and a truck or SUV. Gas mileage could play a factor. I'm looking to spend 10k or less. I love the interior of the Land Rover, and before it I had a manual 4 cylinder Jeep Wrangler for years (I cried when I sold it, only reason I sold it was because it was a manual). Before that was a 97 Ford Ranger, which I really liked but not enough room. Any ideas on what I should buy? I was kind of interested in an F150 or Sportrac when I bought the Land Rover, but couldn't afford them. Prices have come down, since then. I also wouldn't mind an automatic Jeep. Any suggestions appreciated.

  1. Ford Ranger,, there is nothing else,, if you have a brain

  2. $10 to $12,000

    Ford Explorer Sport Trac 03

    Nissan Xterra 03

    Toyota 4Runner 01

    avoid Jeeps & Land Rovers

too expensive to own & repair

  3. From a financial point of view, any advisor will tell you what is widely known as "it's cheaper to keep her". If your current vehicle is payed for, it will always be cheaper to keep it and repair it as you go.

Stricktly from a vehicle point of view, you wont find another vehicle out there at that price range that will come anywhere near the fun, capability, safety and luxury, all in one package like the Rovers can.

All that being said, I must quote a well used phrase amongst LR owners: " Owning a Land Rover is like dating a super model. Sure they can be tempermental and high maintenance..., but WOOHOO!!! Sounds like your Disco is starting to show signs of wear and tear. If your husband is handy with a wrench and a s***w driver, then it's not hard at all to keep her in good shape. There are many parts stores that carry Land Rover parts all over this country. If you do a little research, you will find one near your location that will happily ship the parts to you. Sure you can't just walk into a Discount Auto Parts and find Rover parts like you can for a Chevy, but then again, a Land Rover is Certainly not a Chevy, is it?

If all you ever did with it was put it in "drive" and commute to work totally unaware of the intricate work your systems were doing to keep you safe and in traction with the road, regardless of the surface conditions, then switching to a Ford is no big loss. If you , on the other hand, understood the vehicle and what it offered you, then it's going to be very hard to settle for anything less should you decide to go that route.

Always hate to see people full of misconceptions about the Land Rover brand, and giving bad advice based on them, but at the end, it is your decision to make, not mine ;-)
