Question:

What type of varnish should I use to "seal" sharpie markers on plastic?

I tried clear nail varnish but it dissolved the sharpie ink. Varnish in craft shops are marked as either being for oil based paints or acrylics based paints. Will either of these definitely work? I'd rather know what type of varnish to use than what brand....most brands people give me are American but I live in Ireland. Cheers!

  1. By chance do you have Mod Podge there?  This is a water-based glue/sealant that works on a variety of items.  If you can get your hands on some, that would be the first thing I would try.  Good luck!

  2. Sharpie markers' ink is soluable in lacqer thinner and acetone.  Any spray containing lacqer or acetone will melt the marker image.  There are several spray and brush on brands of acrylic and latex varnish, clear epoxy and polyurethane (generally soluable in mineral spirits until it cures) marked "safe for plastic" that may work.  I hesitate to suggest a brand name as I don't know what is available in your area.

  3. mod podge might work but it might want to peel off of the plastic when it's dry.  I was going to suggest gel medium but that might do the same.  how about a workable fixatif?  that comes in a spray can and I find it in my local michael's in with the spray paints.  I'm not sure if it contains acetone or the other one mentioned so you'd have to check the label.
