What type of vehicle would make a good bush bruiser?

I want to do a project and it would be easier to start off with something that is already a 4x4. I was thinking an older Pathfinder or 4runner but that is really overdone. If you have any neat ideas of something that is really tough or easily customizable let me know.

I hate to say it but the Jeep CJ is king of off road.

but don't expect it function as your daily driver also they are too unreliable.

Pathfinders are cheaper and easier to find than 4Runners.
