  1. cold front

  2. A cold front is by far the best weather front for producing thunderstorms. Cold fronts are the most effective lifting mechanisms for warm, moist air. That warm, moist air is present within a Maritime Tropical (mT) air mass. Cold fronts bring in cold, dry air because of a Continental Polar (cP) air mass. After all, thunderstorms have three requirements for development: abundant moisture, instability, and a lifting mechanism. As long as the instability is present, thunderstorms will develop ahead of the cold front. The instability is provided by sharply contrasting air masses.

  3. A cold front moving into a warmer air mass.
