Question:

What type of wood should I use to make a monopoly board?

I'm making my own customised monopoly board. I plan to cut it in half and connected by hinges to make fold into a full board. It has to be a strong wood so it doesn't get worn easily, and also a wood that can easily be cleaned.

I'm not a profession in this field... So could anyone please tell me what type of wood I should use? (Along with any other tips for making the board lol :))

  1. MDF is good and cheap, But i would go  for 3/4 ply, it wont dent as easy as MDF and when sanded down and varnished will show the grain of the wood, and look a lot better. Add the decal before you varnish, give it a couple of coats, It will look the nuts and be hard wearing.

    Easy!

  2. use 1/8 in. hardboard....perfect for this kind of project...

  3. MDF  is probably your best bet. BUT, always varnish or stain it when you have the finished product coz apparently it can give off dodgy dust but varnishing it keeps this locked away. I would also possibly say 'Ply' wood, but this is quite thin and i would imagine it to 'bow' after a while....so go with the MDF.

  4. I wouldn't use MDF if you want something durable unless it has wood veneer on both sides, but you would have to put a wood edge banding on the raw edges of the MDF.  Birch would be a good, hard durable wood to use. If you put 2 or 3 coats of lacquer or  polyurethane on top of it, it will protect it and easily cleaned.
