  1. I think its a matter of personal preference and how long you would like the desk to last. Some woods have beautiful natural color, so you need to know if you want to paint it or if you want a natural look.

  2. The type of wood you use is up to you! It depends on what you want desk to look like and how long you want it to last.

Anykind of wood will work when do this kind of job!

  3. Maybe you should consider a plywood desk top laminated with formica? That makes for a fine work surface.

Either buy some 3/4" AC fir plywood, or spend a little most and use cabinet grade birch plywood.

Formica comes in a huge variety of colors, patterns and textures and is easy to apply.

If you opt for the birch plywood and want a natural wood finish, the birch will take a stain pretty nicely, but since you're using 2 X 4 stock for the legs, maybe a laminated top would be good.

If you want to use the birch plywood with a stained finish, buy some of the edge banding tape which you can apply with an ordinary home clothes iron.
