What type of wood would be used in place of slate in a pool table?

What type of wood would be used in place of slate in a pool table?

Try oak, like flooring type.

Probably MDF, but its not as smooth as a slate, and is often hard/impossible to recover should something happen to the cloth.

Wood?? You gotta be kidding me. Wood expands and contracts with temperature and humidity. You'd eventually have a warped table. That's why slate is used. Marble could be used too, but is very expensive and much heavier.

I've never seen a pool table with the felted area of the table made of wood. Ya think there's a good reason for that?

None. Wood  is  not  a  suitable  surface  for  a  pool  table. Only  slate  will  do.
