Interlux Brightside is inexpensive and easy to spray ... some can even "tip" it.

Depends on the boat.  I have seen several low cost do it yourself paint jobs that turned out ok.   I know a fellow who brushed awlgrip on his boat instead of the usual spray on and it looked pretty good unless you looked really close.  

I once repainted an old boat with urethane automotive paint and it turned out really nice.

where abouts on the boat ?

If you want dark colours, like a narrowboat, use Rylards glassfibre primer thne use thier standard undercoats and topcoats.

For under the water like you use either an anti-fouling paint for salt water, or any paint for fresh/canal water. You can even "black" fiberglass with cold tar if its a slow-water boat.

hopefully you live near a fishing port and not just a river.

go to a ships painter or chandlery and get a TWO PACK paint. i tried a single (1) part paint and it only lasted about 6 months and needs doing again this year before i put the boat in the water.

put antifouling on after your paintjob and don,t forget give your paint a good, and i mean GOOD rubbing down to give it a key

using a 1 pack means it will rub off by the fenders etc.

2 pack gives it a bit of an armoured coating.

ordinary gloss paint chips off very easy and peels but its ok for one season.

one other tip............. use a roller to put the paint on with as it leaves a much better finish than a brush
