There are two major categories of beer that you identify in your question: ale and lager.  Ale is fermented with top fermenting yeasts generally at temperatures between 65 and 85 degrees -- depending on beer style.  Because these brews are fermented at higher temperatures, they have more flavor derived from their yeast.  Lager beers are fermented with bottom fermenting yeast at lower temperatures.  Generally below 55 degrees.

This list could probably be quadrupled in size in both categories.  But this should give you a starting point.  Categorization of beers is a sticky point and often contentious even among brewers.  For example:  the Brooklyn Brewing Company and Schneider Weiss recently released Brooklyner-Schneider Hopfen-Weisse.  This is an aggressively hopped wheat beer.  It really defies any simple category, but an interesting beer nonetheless.
