  1. GIS stands for geographic information system and is software that displays digital map data and allows users to query and analyse that data. GIS software has evolved from a combination of two well established types of software: the way in which map features are handled is based on graphics and computer-aided-design (CAD) technology; the way in which attribute information is handled has been developed from conventional spreadsheet and database technology.

    All of the Utilities (Telephone, Hydro, etc) use GIS

    Municipalities, Counties, Federal Gov't use GIS to keep records of streets, addresses, parcels, info, etc.

    The post offices, UPS, Purolator use GIS to track packages and aid their delivery people.

    Then there are all kinds of private companies, numerous types of businesses that use GIS to keeps records of their customers and clients and their shipping information. They may also use it to do some analysis on target areas and find out the demographics of a given area.

    Emergency services use GIS to help them find the quickest route to those in need.
