  1. At the time the first Australians arrived, the continent's climate was undergoing some change.  The megafauna of Australia (giant wombats etc) were dying out - some blame this on the arrival of humans but they were already vulnerable because of climatic change.  The continent was becoming drier, was the main thing, and the plains were becoming deserts no longer able to sustain big animals.  At the time they arrived, it would have been considerably colder in Australia than it is today, and also colder than where they had come from in Asia.  Shortly afterwards, things warmed up and the sea level rose and cut Australia off.
