What types of fast growing trees are best to plant as sight and sound barriers in Des Moines, Iowa?

As a central Iowan, I can tell you that cypress DO NOT grow in Iowa...

When planted in tight rows or groves trees can also provide as a noise barrier. It really doesn't matter what type, just as long as they can compact well together.  Evergreens are a good choice because they do not lose there leaves in the winter.  I would recommend using spruce, yew, juniper, cedar, and pine.
