What types of horse questions would you like to see more of on here?

I often read comments like: the questions are all the same, you can leave and come back and it never changes, we'd like to see more relevent questions...so we all know what types of questions we would rather not see on here. What types of questions would you like to see more of on here? If this sections was geared especially to what draws you in, what would you be reading, asking, responding to in an ideal world?

I love training questions, especially ones where someone with experience has done things right and come to a point with a particular horse and training issue and is stumped. I find the knowledge from others beneficial to progressing myself and applying new approaches when I get stuck. I live to learn and enjoy sharing what has worked for me, but am prepared to rethink something if I maybe hadn't considered it from all angles.

I'm a sucker for philosophical type horse/horse behaviors/psychology questions.

Yes, too much free time in the AC today. Can't complain :-)

  1. I really like the philosophy, behavior, and psychology questions as well. I'd like to see more of those. I also like training questions from knowledgeable people who just need a pointer or two or who are encountering a new problem. Those are interesting and fun and I would like to see more of them.

I would like to see a lot less of the name my horse, evaluate my horse's conformation, don't I ride pretty, I don't know anything about horses but I bought a two year old anyway and now he's beating me up, howrse, and especially I am too lazy, cheap, and/or dumb to call a vet so you guys give me a quick fix for twisted gut.

I guess that last paragraph sounded like a rant. I don't mind veterinary questions from people who are just looking for information about a condition, or want to see what others have experienced, but asking strangers of questionable qualifications to diagnose a horse for anything sight unseen is just dumb.

  2. Ok i am going to answer a bit differently. I am gonna get the trolls for this LOL. Anyways, some of the medical ones, i find are extremly not intersting at all. The ones that are training are also not interesting (there are a few that i can relate to, but not many). the problem is, i bet a some people who answer those questions know nothing on the subject, so they give false advice/answers. it is really hard to give fully accurate medical advice on the internet, the people on here arent getting paid, so why would they want to help with those???

I know everyone is saying that they dont like the questions about people wanting you to rate the horse, but i think they are fun and different. I like to see different horses.

My favorite questions on here actually happen to be when people have a problem with their horses at the barn they go to ext. For example i like the questions where there is someone who has a problem with someone stuck up at the ranch. I know it is like total gossip, but i find those fun to read and answer.

    My total honest opinion,

now go ahead and give me thumbs down :D

    see if i care.

  3. I would like to see thoughtful questions where people are looking for a different point of view--the topic doesn't really matter that much as long as the person has thought about the question and already done some research for a solution.

  4. I like training and medical/home vetting ones.

Even if I don't know about certain types of training...like english...I still get to read and maybe learn something.

Medical...someone usually knows about some new product or dangers/side effects of a product.  I get information that I can do further research on myself.

Home vetting...I do alot of that.  Some is just to keep the animal alive until the vet can get there.  I think that's important.  It's not alternative to professional vet care...but sometimes necessary.  And many things don't actually require a vet call...if the owner would just learn from the vet what to do in certain circumstances.  Like minor wound care.  And KNOWING when you can't take care of it on your own.

  5. the ones from people who have common sense.

  6. I am with you....  psyc, training and health always interests me.  I hate the ones that sound as if they are coming from a p*****n. ( not that they all do, or that teens don't ask good questions) but  Is snookems pretty? I am scared to death but how do I jump, gallop, ride bucks, rears ect.?  Snookems might be dying, but how do i know?  How much does a horse cost? Food? tack?

    Those drive me nuts.

  7. i like horse ones - helping people out with there horses

    i quite like position ones

    good q u get interesting! :)

  8. It'd probably be more enlightening to ask what sort of questions people DON'T want to see.

But there again that has been asked before.

I think most of the questions - good, bad and downright stupid have already been asked but they have been asked by different people and for different reasons. Answers change according to new research, different methods and different ways of approaching whatever the problem happens to be etc etc.

Yes it's a q/a forum but c'mon - you see the social interaction side of it all as well and, as we all know, just talking about  something that's bugging you makes it seem so much less intimidating.

You have a problem and you want to know that you are not the only person this has happened to, you have an idea you want to sound it out and you get good news and want to share it. If you look at it this way then almost all the questions have their place - yes, even the "How can I persuade my parents" ones ( how many of us have been in that situation ? - I know I was !)

The option of whether to answer or not is always there.

  9. yea i no a lot about horses. i would like more questins like whyis my horse like this or how can i get my horse to do thatso i agree.

  10. When I saw the title of your question on the front page before reading the rest of the question, I also immediately thought the same!

I would also like to see more training questions that can be useful for everyones knowledge and to benefit there horses instead.

I am getting tired of the 'Rate my horse', or 'What Show Name??' type of questions! ergh

I think the horse section should be informative of equine studies and ways to help the horse and rider of today!

Im right with you on your opinion!

    Sarah x

Dark Rider - you are right! Medical questions are a good one too.

  11. "I'm a sucker for philosophical type horse/horse behaviors/psychology questions."

Me too! Right on! That's what I'd like to see more of. That and people treating one another with respect and patience.

We don't educate by alienating. Making people feel stupid, scolding or talking down, being smug answering, none of that helps.

    Great question!

  12. I like the questions about horse names..... AND yea i like the training questions too...it helps me to realize what i might need to do with my horse to make it a better horse..

  13. Thank you. Something like this needed to be said. It is getting old reading and anwsering questions about "Is my horse pretty?" "What kind of horse should I get?", "How much does a horse cost?", etc...

Better questions would be nice. Ones like you said such as training, or even medical and care questions.

It would also help if people would write their questions to where they made more sense instead of jumping around. And also with more detail so that we know what exactly is going on.

  14. I would love to see more medical and training qestions on here...because i can relate to most of them!

  15. Is everyone forgetting this is a PUBLIC forum?

No one has the right to say what questions should, or shouldnt be asked here, no one here owns this site.

Yes I too get tired of the 'How do I convince my mum to buy me a horse' and 'What do you think of my horse?' (posted 3 times a day, same d**n pictures!) questions, but this is a public forum, for EVERYONE. If you dont like it, go start your own private forum or something.

It really is so easy to pass by a question that annoys you, its only a small link, dont answer it! If you get stupid questions to your answer, just ignore them, you were probably expecting it anyway.

I mean no offence to anyone here, and Im not trying to be rude, but comeon guys, how are we surpose to teach the young people that use this site (weather they are surpose to or not) how to be tollerant and respectful of others if we are being disrespectful of young kids and people who we think dont ask good questions.

Go on thumbs me down, but you know Im right

  16. Yeah I agree with you. I'd rather have more training questions and medical questions. I'm really intereste din horse behavious as well so more of those.

I also like just sort of random questions like this one, they're always fun for a change!

I want to see WAY LESS questions like, "Is my horse PWETTY???" , "How can I convince my parents to buy me a horse? I need one!! I NEED one!!"... And no more howrse either, lol.

Haha, we've got fans going all over our house. It's so hot outside!

  17. Hey you lil' sucker - I'm just like you - I like analyzing this c**p and I'm in the AC (but should be doing other things rather than being here- it's addicting).

I also have noticed that people ask similar questions - and I was a little annoyed with this as well.  Then I began to think about who the audience is and what their habits are.  The first page's list of questions on here change within hours - it's not uncommon to find a similar question even from only a day earlier way back in the list.  I don't think people want to search through all the thousands of questions to find one that might answer their particular thought - especially if they're using dial up (like many of us po' folk have to).

Additionally, some people have difficulty reading and digesting the questions and answers put forth in another's words.  Some want 3 word answers - some like detailed answers, etc.  So they probably figure if they ask the question in their own words, they'll understand the answers better.  It IS much faster here to ask the question and await answers than to search for something that MIGHT fit your needs.

So - with that said, I like all the questions I see - I think the only ones without value are the ones obviously from goof offs who are trying to waste each others' time.  Additionally, I would prefer to see people ask honest questions meant to learn something - not diss other askers for their lack of knowledge.

I am not knowledgeable in the sport of jumping, and I don't know a lot about english riding, but I have ridden English before and would love to learn again when I have the time.  so I tend to answer questions I feel that I have valuable input on - not just answering to answer - ones that I might actually be able to add value to someone's life with or that someone can lock away in their brain and have learned something useful today.

How's that for philosophical and psychy answer?

  18. I like the training ones, but only the ones where it stumps EVERYONE and then someone flies through with a brilliant answer... i don't like the "how to get my horse into a frame" (stupidest thing anyone ever came up with....)

I generally like the medical ones, but once again only the interesting ones... but i hate people who say "CALL A VET" and expect best answer.

I love the ones about ottb's since I’m obsessed XP

I also like the ones about products or tack (though not the "should I use a martingale” so I get to see new things, new advances in technology, it’s very cool [=

o o! I also really like the ones asked from England and Australia! ha-ha, I’m here in the US and to read the British/Australian questions is so interesting... just to see what it’s like...

and, surprisingly enough, I don't mind the "judge the conformation" or "is she pretty" questions, granted I NEVER EVER answer (unless something is wrong, bad feet, dangerous situation) but I like to see other people horses. I like to try and see as many things as humanly possible so that I have as much knowledge as I can, it bothers me to know theres more out there to learn if I’m not doing anything to use it!

it’s sad though, thinking about it.  I hadn't been on the computer for about 24 hours (only have time at night..) so I come in and theres usually about 7 or 8 pages of questions, most of the questions I don't even bother to look at, and then I’ll look at maybe 20 questions and answer 6... You’d think there would be more interesting questions...

  19. I think questions about how you determine when to call the vet in a given situation, when to hire a trainer, when to go get some help from someone more experienced...are all very helpful.

We all learn differently and from experience I can say I've ridden with people who should never, ever try to train their own horse.  EVER.  Nice folks, but there's a significant amount of gift involved in being a really good trainer...and they ain't got it.

Same for when to call the vet.  I relied heavily on my sister when I got back into horses...she is a wealth of information and I have learned a lot from her.  Some people you can coach, others don't have the ability to discern when something is going south fast.  I have a horrible story about an acquaintance of my husband who called me for pointers about a sick horse.  NO WAY would I trust him to try to manage a mild colic...no sense about the gravity of it at all.

I also like hypothetical/philosophical discussions that may inspire people to re-think their actions.

Troll poking is always entertaining, too.

  20. I definitely agree with you.

I could care less about all the people who ask questions like, How do I get a horse? Is my horse pretty? Do you like my horse? Whats your favorite breed? and stuff like that.

I want real questions, that I can actually learn from too. Like medical and breeds and stuff.

  21. Intelligent questions.  I am sick to death of "kids" not smart enough to name a horse, people who have no business eating with a fork who own horses & don't know why they  bite, kick & buck or what to do about it because they don't want to smack the horse & prefer no, no & baby talk.

I am also sick of "kids" who ask HOWRSE questions when my 7 year old could answer them.  Either go to the GAMES section, look it up yourself or better yet, DON'T play a game you aren't smart enough to play.  GEEZ!!!  I sure hope THOSE people don't own REAL horses.  Can you imagine what a mess that would be????

There is nothing wrong with fun questions, but in order to get helpful responses to serious questions, askers need details, a decent grasp of the english language & decent spelling skills.
