  1. re-enforced concrete and re-enforced chimneys

  2. How about domes? Futuristic and very sturdy.

  3. good (extensive), foundations. preferably one story, reinforced walls, doors and celings.

sometimes houses are designed in a pyramid shape because it is easy to withstand earthquakes as a pyramid.

  4. Normally the numbers of floors are restricted to 2 or less.

Materials need to flex with the shake so wood, steel are good. Concrete and brick are not good.

Earthquakes can bring other problems such as mudslides or water so siting of houses is important

  5. Wood framed houses, preferably single-story but no more than two-story would be most resistant. Basically anything that can flex with the ground shaking stands a chance of remaining upright.

On the other hand, some full-scale studies have shown that a building may withstand violent shaking intact while the contents are completely destroyed.

When it comes down to larger magnitude events, the safest place to be is standing in the middle of an empty field. Remember, earthquakes don't kill people, buildings kill people.
