  1. Meteorology, Climatology

http://www.met.psu.edu/Jobs/jobs_table.h... this site has job listings for both so you can see why type of jobs deal with the atmosphere.

  2. Building atmospheres from scratch is the new wave of the future.  Now that 160+ moons have been discovered in our own solar system, we need to develop an understanding of the technology to build "atmospheres" on them.  It would be a unique blend of chemistry and geophysics to produce an atmospheric scientist (not weather forecasting).

An atmosphere protects Earthlings from gamma, uv and x-rays.  While Earth's magnetic field protects us from cosmic rays (galactic, solar, extragalactic, ultra high energy, and anamolous rays).

The molten "dynamo" in the Earth's outer core creates this magnetic field. It consists of molten liquid metals such as iron, nickel and cobalt, while the rotating motion of the planet produces the Coriolis Effect which gives rise to eddy currents and the subsequent magnetic field. It's estimated that the magnetic field at the center of the Earth is at least 10 Tesla or 100,000 gauss. But the magnetic field on the surface of the Earth is only 0.5 to 2.0 gauss, since magnetic flux varies as the inverse CUBE of the distance.

If we were to live on the moon or Mars for example, we'd have to reactivate their defunct dynamos.  One approach would be to insert a Superconducting Ring ranging from 2 to 14 Tesla, depending on how much iron-nickel-cobalt is in the core to begin with, to create an artificial magnetic field.  New developments in superconductors, such as Iron doped with Arsenic, may make this a reality someday.

  3. You may work with some NGO who works for atmosoehere and environment.

Working with an NGO that works for atmosphere is as good as working for atmosphere.
