So I was reading about snails online and thought that it would be fun and fairly easy to keep one as a pet. Then I read that Giant African Land Snails are illegal to keep as pets in the US, which is fine by me because I wanted a small snail. But that got me to thinking and I was wondering if there are any other snails that are illegal to keep as pets? Or if all of them are illegal to keep as pets.

Oh, I was also searching online and found this one website where someone said that it was no longer illegal to keep Giant African Land Snails as pets- it was only illegal in certain states. Is that true?

And now that I think about it, I guess it's ok if it is illegal to have any snails as pets because I just read that some snails can carry mites... and I have a phobia of mites, ticks, fleas, lice, etc. so I don't think that would work out too well.

  1. The USDA specifically prohibits interstate movement or importation into the United States of the Achatina fulica (Giant African Snail) (see NOTE:), the Pomacea canaliculata (Channeled or Golden Apple Snail) and the Rumina decollata (Decollate Snail). These molluscs are banned for interstate movement or import into the United States.

Giant African snails are being used increasingly in science lessons in schools. These snails are illegal in the continental United States because they are highly invasive, and can cause extensive damage to important food crops and other agricultural and natural resources. These snails can also pose a risk to human health (for information, see http://www.cdc.gov, or call your state health department).
