What typically does it mean if your dog scoots her butt on the ground/rug? Before or after elimination?

My nearly 1 year old has been scooting her butt on the carpet, floors, even the driveway lately. This has been happening before and after elimination. She's short haired, so nothing's "dangling" so to speak.

  1. It may need worming, if your wormers are up to date then it may be its anal glands...sounds horrible but they made need expressing!! Seek a vet for this

  2. It typically means that the dog either has worms, or needs it's anal glands expressed.

The Vet can help you with either problem - Make sure you bring a stool sample with you for testing.

  3. Probably anal glands need attending to.  Job for the vet if you don't know how to do it yourself.  Vet's just love these consultations btw.

  4. She needs her anal glands cleaned. I'd suggest having a vet or groomer do this as the smell is horrid.

She's scooting to try and express the glands, they are normally expressed when the dog eliminates, however if the food the dog is eating is causes soft stools, the glands may not be expressed properly.

  5. sounds like her anal glads need clearing.  Take him to your vet or a local groomer to do this for you

  6. her backside could be itching, I had a dog that did that at times and I just figured he was scratching his bottom the only way he could.

  7. my german shep/border collie does that all the time before and after. i think they are just cleaning, stimulating, or itching. i think its just a natural thing. Best Wishes

  8. Dogs have anal glands and sometimes get really full, so they scoot their butts across the ground to express some liquid.

  9. This is only rarely caused by worms. Most dogs who have worms do NOT scoot. (ETA: Dogs absolutely can NOT get pinworms. Not possible. That's a human parasite which does not have the ability to infect dogs or cats. If any worms are going to cause anal itching it will likely be tapeworms, which are caused from swallowing fleas that contain part of the tapeworm lifecycle.)

  10. Just because nothing is dangling doesnt mean she doesnt feel something back there. Or her anal glands could be full and irritating her.
