  2. My daughter has only used the utensils that we used.  A regular fork and spoon.  She just has to hold it closer on the handle.

  3. When my daughter first approached the age of using utensils, we got her those big plastic ones at wal-mart. She never used them. So we swtiched to the character ones with metal tops and thick plastic bottoms. But we also went a few months where if she's eating something she can't use her fingers, we feed her off of our plates. Now she's 19 months, and she runs to the table when it's time to eat so she can play with her silverware, lol. They have the graduates silverware that is similar to the character ones, they call it safety silverware because the two outer fork prongs bend inwardsat the top to help avoid injury, but we haven't tried that yet. Good luck!

  4. I really like utensils that have a beefy handle for grasping.  What I also believe is important is the handle also have a non-slip surface, it just gives your little one that much more control.

In addition, control just doesn't pertain to the utensils, it has a lot do do with bowls and plates too.  A plate or bowl that has a non-skid bottom (or suction bottom) with raised edges helps them that much more.

You can improvise if you want, these below are just examples.
