What use is the Neutral gear in toyota corolla?

When do I use N gear because the only ones that I use the most are D, R and P. Does it use less fuel when I stop at a traffic light for more than a minute and switch the gear to N instead of keeping it in D?

  1. If you should ever need to push your car at any time, Neutral will come in VERY handy as it's a lot easier to push it in neutral than in drive...  In drive, you'd be having to overcome the weight of the car plus engine/transmission resistance, neutral takes the engine/transmission out of that picture.

If you live in a place that has snow and ice in the winters, putting it in neutral when slowing down and stopping can help you stop faster without sliding on ice.  Can be useful in case of an emergency stop on slippery roads.

Some people say you can save a bit of fuel putting it in neutral at stop lights, but I can't personally see that it'd save a whole lot as the engine is still running (and usually at a bit higher rpm when it's not in gear)...

If the car stalls while you're driving, you can stick it in neutral and try to start the car while it coasts, as neutral and park are the only "gears" that will allow the starter to work on most modern cars with automatic transmissions.  If it does start back up, that saves having to stop in the middle of traffic just to restart it in park...

No, it's not a gear you're likely to use often, but it's there for when you do need the car to roll freely or need a rolling restart...

Those are the uses I can think of, anyway...

  2. It might save a little gas, but not a whole lot to notice the difference. I also do this to with my automatic without my foot on the brake. But only on flat ground.

  3. besides all the already said, you use neutral when you have equipment in the car that need engine power, as for example when you use a winch in a truck

all the rest is as is

  4. neutral is used for letting the wheels roll freely without being propelled by the drive train.  some times that you will need neutral gear:  when the vehicle is being towed, driving down a steep grade (fuel savings), any time you aren't accelerating (fuel savings), any time you park on an incline put the vehicle in neutral and engage the parking brake (eases stress on transmission)

  5. After your transaxle breaks, you'll need to put it in neutral so the towtruck can tow it.

  6. Neutral is used when you need to push your vehicle - dead engine. The wheels are free to roll, but no engine power to the wheels.

It might save a little gas when stopped and idling, but probably not that much.
