I have no idea what use they are.  Seems like England would save millions by doing away with the monarchy.  Make all of them get a real job like ever one else.

If you can vote and your vote carries weight then the monarch has no power, in which case why get rid of them?

If you cant vote and your vote carries no weight then good luck accomplishing that goal... someones got to lead

The monarch is there because, traditionally, their blood is still royal.  Their monarch decisions lead to democracy... by their own choices, right?  They chose to lose their own power.  Respect and honor that.

well most of them are just figureheads, but even so, being Royal is a part of thier heritage and family history....  and because they are photographed constantly, at times they can be quite funny....like Harry....  that kid cracks me up!!!

I would definitely vote for a republic, personally I think there's a much greater chance of this through an independent Scotland than through Britain as the monarchy is much less popular north of the border.

Many of us in the States feel the same way... not about Britain, but our own country.

I know it's not my fault, but I feel the need to apologize to the rest of the world for how stupid our country has become.

Although most of the monarchy's roles are now either redundant or just 'symbolic' they bring a huge revenue into this country every year with tourists etc. They also do a lot of work for charities and are good for international relations. (Everyone hates the PrimieMinister, but who really hates the queen?!)

Polls in the UK have said that there is overwhelming support for the monarchy to remain and the Republican movement is growing but nowhere near a majority of the Population.

If in Australia where you HAVE to vote and the Republican movement is a majority couldn't even vote to get rid of the Queen as Head of State, why do you think a country like Britain will ever vote to become a Republic in the near future?

well, to be perfectly honest i think they're a waste of space but think about all the money made from the tourists? if they were abolished it would have a knock-effect over the most of the country. sorry, but for that reason alone i think they should stay.

the monarchy are firmly embedded in the ruling establishment, the mystery remains as to why the average british joe-6 pack (more accurately jane-6 pack) happily grovel before them, getting zip in return.
