What used to happen to people back in the day that had pink eye?

When I was a child my mom used a very mild warm (not hot) boric acid solution to flush out our eyes when we had pink eye.  That was back in the 1950's or 60's.

When I recently got pink eye in one eye, I found pink eye relief eye drops.
