Question:

What uses the least electricity a toaster or electric grill?

If I have to make 8 or more slices of toast, is it more efficient to use a gril or a 2 slice toaster. It is quicker to use the grill as I can do 4 slices at a time. But then you have to heat it beforehand.

I am trying hard to be more energy efficient at the moment.

  1. A toaster has smaller elements to heat up and is far more energy efficient than a large grill. (Although is is more time consuming.)

  2. Use the toaster. Anyway gas, electricity etc are all around same price at the moment. Its not "by a looooooooooooooooong way", there isnt really much differance but but still the toaster.

  3. Toaster by a long way  !!

  4. Why not just have bread? No power needed at all then.

  5. I suspect a toaster. But if you are using an electric grill it is really easy to find out exactly. Both the toaster and the grill will have a wattage rating. typically the toaster will be 1000W or 1kW and the grill 1800W(1.8kW) up to possibly 2400W(2.4kW) But don't use my figures check out the particular appliences you have. then time exactly how long each needs to be on for to complete the job. Next multiply the time in seconds by the wattage to give you Joules (energy).

Even though the grill may be about twice the toaster rating, you will probably find that the toaster will be the lower total as it is more efficient at toasting bread, because that is what it was designed to do. There is less element and other metal to heat up, and the bread is closer to the element so less heat is lost.

That calculation works for any electrical applience Time X Wattage = energy.

if you put wattage in kW and multiply by hours used the answer is in kWh and that is the unit you get billed for (well it is in many countries) so multiply it by the cost per unit and you find out how much it costs to run that appliance.

Not all appliances use electricity when switched off. (not necessary to unplug, just switch off at power point). Toasters etc do not have a standby current but many elecronic gadgets do have. If it has a standby mode, that means it is still using electricity while in standby (usually), so switch it off at the wall socket unless you are going to use it again shortly.

  6. Toaster is the BEST.

Plus keep in mind the very best way to reduce energy consumption is to unplug the kitchen appliances after each use. When plugged in all the time they are drawing power the same as a TV and other electrical items in your home.

Even if you use the toaster, 4 to 5 times it will still be less to operate that a grill. You can use a four slice toaster to speed up the process of making toast.

Also remember that older appliances use more electricity to operate. Keep your appliances up to date as they are constantly changing them and making them more energy efficient. Never use a refrigerator over 15 years old. The older the more money you waste. Keep current and try to buy appliances with the ENERGY STAR. These help conserve energy and can lower your unility bill too.

    Good Luck
