Value added is a difficult concept...it usually means something above and beyond that which is normally expected.....so rather than just a normal lesson, some additional items on other subjects were included to sort of broaden the curriculum...as I say, its a hard concept to explain, which is why it is used a lot in 'Management speak' as most people don't understand what it means.....


  2. I think it depends on the context.  Value added can also mean a score from a test compared with a standard score.

    For example in the Salford Reading tests, children receive a reading age as their score.  The value added is the comparison of this score to their age.

    If the child scored 8:11 (eight years and eleven months) and their age is 8:7 then the value added score is +4 (months).  If they score 8:11 and their age is 9:2 then the value added would be -3.

    It also works by comparing scores to a national average, or to previous scores that the child acheived.
