We are invited by the Mexican friend to Manzanillo, to stay with him and his family for a few, 3-4 weeks in February.

We are going to drive over there. We want to take 3-4 musical instruments as the gifts for him and his sons, up to what value can we take new instruments without paying custom duty fee ?

We will have resits.

  1. NONE... as in NOTHING... just take the musical instruments as YOUR OWN and for your OWN USE... and don't even THINK about declaring them as gifts, because the mexican government discourages it.

You WILL need Mexican Insurance, and a Mexican tag for your car,  and you buy that at the border... preferably the day BEFORE you plan to cross over into Mexico.

Check with the Mexican customs and immigration people or the nearest consulate to get the latest information.  OH... you may also have to post a bond of $1000 or so... that depends on a lot of things, but someone will tell you.

If you don't have the proper paperwork once you get 25 miles past the border into Mexico... you will be in BIG TROUBLE if you get stopped... and you will get stopped.

Once you get into mexico, buy a GOOD roadmap of Mexico... a good one will cost about $3 to $5 but it shows all the side roads and routes you won't find on your wal-mart road atlas.

  2. Just declare the instruments as personal, for your own use, and you will not have to pay duty.

  3. ?
