  1. It is the longest river in the world. Rising in east central Africa near Lake Victoria, it flows northward through Uganda, Sudan, and Egypt before emptying into the Mediterranean Sea.

    Length: 6,695 km/4,160 mi.

The river basin covers an area of more than 2.8 million sq km (1.1 million sq mi).

  2. What values?

It is longest river with the narrowest river basin for its importance and length. It passes through desert areas for the dwellers of whom it is the life-line; its floods are welcome. Unlike in Mississippi (that usurped the top spot as the longest river for a while, cooking up wrong figures) navigation is difficult over long stretches, due to many regularly spaced cataracts. Nile was cradle for the greatest civilisation on Earth and sheltered many great brains like 'Eratosthenes' in ancient times who contributed to man's thought. For centuries its source or starting point was a mystery tucked away deep in the rain forests of Eastern Africa. For some time, the great Lake Victoria (Second largest after Lake Superior) was thought to be the source of Nile. But then the small streams joining them pointed further south crossing the Equator; so Nile actually is born in the southern hemisphere.
