  1. Beets actually dye fabric a pale beige, not pink at all, once you've washed it. One of the most boring dyes known.

The best vegetable to use for dyeing, if you want one that is actually eaten, is turmeric. It is a root that is used in ground form as a yellow spice. It is easy to find in a grocery store. To use it, first mordant your fabric by boiling it with alum (one ounce of alum for one pound of dry fabric), let it dry, then boil the mordanted fabric for an hour with an ounce of turmeric. The color will fade from light and from washing, so you will need to plan on redyeing every year or so. You can use turmeric on unmordanted fabric, but mordanting helps it to dye more fabrics and to last a bit longer.

Most plant dyes are used by boiling one to three pounds of the plant material for every pound of mordanted fabric. Boil for several hours and then strain the dye, then boil the pre-mordanted fabric in this dye extract for an hour. Keep the temperature of the water just below boiling if you are using a red or purple fruit, such as grapes; the natural colorings in berries and grapes will turn brown, and will wash out pretty quickly.

Don't even try to dye synthetic fibers. You will find that wool and silk are much easier to dye well than cotton is.

  2. onion skins dye things yellow

    beets dye things pink

this is all i know of, you boil the items in water, strain and then dye your fabric in the water, boil it as you are dying it, it will set the dye in the fabric this way..........good luck, sorry i don't know any of any others
