I want to start a garden and I realize that only certain things will grow in the winter. What can I plant that won't die? Also, they will be in pots on my balcony, not planted in the ground.

  1. Sausage seeds?

  2. San Diego weather stauys warn enough in through the fall in winter so you can grow a big variety of herbs and veggies. I'm in L.A. and I have had basil, lettuce,, tomatoes, squash, carrots, and strawberries. My banana, orange, avacado, lemon, and nectarine trees do well all year as well. The lettuces are quick growers, so you can get a big variety for your salads and keep replanting after picking.  Any kind of squash thrives here. The basil plant I had grew to about 3 feet high and had wonderful basil all year long. (yummy on pasta) Roma and cherry tomatoes also all year.

    Good luck and happy gardening!

  3. If you have your plants in containers you can plant most anything in beautiful SD:  tomatoes, peppers, bean poles pea poles.  You will be more limited by space than by weather.  Should you get any freezing overnight temps, just bring the guys inside for the night.

I've had success planting peas, a cool-weather vegetable, in hanging pots!  I tell my other gardening friends this and they reply with "Wow, I never thought of trying that!"
