Question:

What vegetables can I plant end of September/start of October?

We have a small(ish) vegetable patch which currently has sweetcorn, spring onions, lettuces and a couple of tomato plants all of which will be done by about the end of September. Given the credit crunch we'd quite like to maximise use of the space so what vegetables can I plant that will grow from then either to give produce through the winter or at least something in early spring?

  1. why not try onions, always useful and easy. You also could do cabbage. Why not take a trip to your local garden centre and ask for advice for their help desk as they know whats best in your area.

  2. Carrots = Sow from now to September at 10-day intervals for steady supply. Baby carrots can be picked within four weeks. Crops sown after mid-May should avoid the first generation of carrot fly but, in areas where it is a problem, cover the crop with horticultural fleece.

Spring onions=Sow winter varieties, such as 'Ramond', from August onwards and pick in 4-6 weeks.

Hope i helped =D caitlin xx

  3. You might ask your County Extension Service.   they are very useful and knowledgable.

  4. Hi Buckaroo B.!

To answer this question with any credibility, it would be good to know where you are.

Your Hemisphere (north or south) would be a start (Summer here, Winter there??), buy the Country you live in is a must.

If you know your "Growing Zone", it would be good to state that too.
