Question:

What vegetables can you regrow from the kitchen?

My little one has developed an interest in gardening and after showing her how to plant spring onions in the yard and regrow them she has started to ask what other fruits and vegetables we can reuse from the kitchen in the same manner. We have looked at avocados but they take far too long to bear fruit so any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

  1. i dont knoW!!!

  2. You can grow potatoes, sweet and normal, garlic, ginger, herbs, mung beans, sprouts like alf alfa, pumpkins, tomatoes, bok choy, paw paw, and heaps more. Beans and sprouts are the quickest and easiest to grow, you just buy a pack of them and follow the instructions, the other may take longer and need more space.

    Good luck.

  3. Potatoes are a good one. Just cut with one eye and place under grass clippings and a light amount of dirt. Garlic grows from the bulbs and are best planted in the fall.

  4. Potatoes, white and sweet, are easy. Just need a piece with "eyes" in it.

Go to the store and get chives, too, if she likes them.

  5. I love making compost and when it's ready I tip it out into the sunshine and anything that sprouts I transfer into a pot to see what it becomes.  I've gotten tomatoes, pumpkins, potatoes, capsicums, all sorts of stuff sprout and grow.  Of course this takes quite a long time and I know little ones aren't that patient.  You could try getting a good quality potting mix and chuck in different veges and see what pops up.  I just used old tins with holes stabbed in the bottom to save buying lots of pots.

  6. Hi there, potatoes grow well (plant some skin with an "eye" on it. A clove of garlic will turn into a whole bulb. Pumpkin seeds will grow a huge vine full of pumpkins for you. Capsicum seeds, tomato seeds, any herbs that have gone to seed will also work well. To get them going, and allow your child to watch, you can germinate the seed inside in a bit of cotton wool soaked in water inside a glass. Once a seed sprouts, it can be planted in the garden and watch it grow. Enjoy!!

  7. my kids save all kinds of seed, pumpkin, tomato, chilli, cucumber, and we plant onions patatoes and garlic that, has started to sprot

  8. i grew corn,beans melons,mustard ,from the kitchen

  9. Parsley

  10. Tomatoes are easy to sprout from the seeds if you save them instead of eating them.

  11. As far as drying out the seeds from fresh vegetables and fruits  ? Yellow squash and zucchini squash will grow that way.I haven't tried growing other varieties in the squash family. Some vine fruits will grow that way such as cantelopes or watermelons.I haven't tried any others,at least not from drying the seeds out myself.

I am though.I like kiwi fruit and have some now that I am going to try to grow from the tiny seeds.I am not sure what kind of soil I would need but I am sure it's loamy.

I always let my children plant my spring and fall garden with me when they were young and I think it taught them patience.

    They always enjoyed it .

  12. Beans and potatoes..............and actually that boss of ours put seeds in everything he made good so if you let you plants go to seed and dry them you can probably have about anything...my wife starts a lot of seeds in out garden window in the winter and we just put them out come planting season. good luck........I did the same with my kids......lots of pumpkins around halloween time for the class mates:)

  13. Eggplant I have those in my kitchen

  14. As a child I used to grow beans in a cup with some Cotton. They sprout pretty quickly so it's the perfect veggie to grow, for a child. Hope that helps! Also you can do it year round!
