  1. I'm not sure if rats and gerbils eat the same diet but I give my gerbil all kinds of fruits and vegitables. His favorites are celery and bananas. He also loves sunflower seeds, but since they are high in fat I don't give him too many.

  2. i had a young rat at one time. i fed mine very small pieces of carrots, grapes, and you might be able to feed him a little bit of lettuce!

  3. rat can eat pretty much anything that we can eat, except junk food. my rats absolutely love bananas, sweet potato, and carrots.

  4. Dangerous Foods

Foods NEVER to feed your rat

•chocolate–contains stimulants that can cause heart failure or neurological poisoning.

    •licorice–neurological poisoning

•raw beans–anti-nutrients that destroy vitamin A and enzymes rats need to digest proteins and starches. Also may cause red blood cells to clump.

•carbonated drinks–rats can’t burp, causes a significant amount of discomfort and god knows what else.

•raw sweet potato–compounds form cyanide in the stomach.

•bleu cheese –the mold is toxic to rats.

•raw red cabbage–antinutrient that destroys thiamin.

•raw brussel sprouts–antinutrient that destroys thiamin.

    •raw artichokes–inhibits protein digestion

•orange juice –can cause kidney cancer in males only.

•green bananas–makes it difficult to digest starches.

  9. From my website:

    Fruits & Veggies

Fresh foods in the form of fruits and vegetables are a very important part of any diet you choose for your rats. Vegetables should generally be given daily while fruits might be limited to a few times a week since they are high in sugar. Both can have a lot of nutrients like vitamins and minerals to add to a diet. Some good vegetables to feed would be romaine lettuce (not iceburg!), peas, corn (occasionally), squash (butternut, acorn, orangetti, spaghetti), broccoli, kale, carrots, bok choy, parsley, bell peppers (red, yellow, orange), sweet potato (cooked, not raw!), cilantro, and dandelion greens. Some good fruits to feed would be blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, cranberries, strawberries, bananas, apples, and pears. It's generally best to go with organic fruits and veggies so as to avoid pesticides.
