What veggies/ fruits grow best in DFW Texas?

I live in Dallas/Fort Worth Texas and with the economy the way it is I am going to plant a garden to help fight the ever growing costs. My problem is I am new to this and I have never grown food before so I need to keep it some what low maintenance. My Dad had a stroke about a year ago so he will be helping me watch it so we can do some things that will need to keep an eye on since he can no longer work he would love to have a "job".

I would love to know from you expired farmers what can grown in our ext ream weather and our crazy climate changes we have.
