I finished building my system and I just need an operating system and linux isnt gonna cut it because it doesnt work with my hardware. My question is which operating system do I buy? I was looking at xp home, xp pro, and I saw a windows xp for system builders. Details about each one would help. Also, when I do buy what is the disadvantage to buying OEM besides the packaging? Do I still get a CD key?

  1. The best one for you would be the home edition, i have heared alot of complaints about the pro and office. Overall XP home edition is the best. Here is a way to save money when you are buying the operating system what you do is get an old operating system like windows ME,98, or even 95. What you do is then you buy a XP home upgrade, what you do is install the upgrade and when it asks for the old opperating system then just put it in let it take the drivers or whatever it needs to then put on the rest of your new XP, what it does is you trick it into thinking that you had a older operating system on it and you are upgrading, whitch is kind of what you are doing (but you will have to research how to do this a little bit more, its been a while since i put my machine together). The advantage to getting the upgrade is so if your computer crashes you can reinstall the operating system, the upgrade is only 90.00, whitch is better than getting the OEM for 90.00 because if your system crashes its gone you have to pay for a whole new operating system, and to get the windown that can be reinstalled it is around 200.00. So this method will save you some money, just be sure to research how to do it correctly, maybe google it there are lots of websites that will give you directions, but check out a few before deciding on one because the information on them might not be the same. I hope this method will be helpfull to you.

    ENJOY your new system!!
