I just found out that my German friend does not have a bible, and I want to buy him one as a present for being the "best man" in our wedding.

  1. It does not matter because all versions are simply fiction.

  2. What version? Well, he's not Catholic so avoid a Bible that includes the Apocrypha. Otherwise, it doesn't much matter. My personal preference is the New American Standard Bible, or NASB - It is generally held to be the most accurate translation from the original language. Great for studying and easier to read than KJV. Good luck and congrats on the wedding!

  3. is a bible really a "best man" gift?

Traditionally, Groomsmen are given gifts that they can wear or carry in their pockets at the ceremony. Cufflinks with their initials engraved, personalized pocket watches and engraved money clips are all special gifts that show them that they were appreciated.

Traditionally, Bridesmaids are given jewelry to wear with their dresses as part of their gift. Make it something special by personalizing it with a message, the date or their name or initials: a necklace, bracelet, anklet or ring. Giving them something that they can wear again and again for years to come will always remind them of how important they are in your life.

do you want to get him a bible in German or in English? 3 German versions exist and 20 versions are in  in English....

i think that it may not be the right thing to give a friend. Is he closer to you or to your future husband? and I think of the bible being more a family gift, my dad gave me my first bible and my grandma gave me the one i have now, and they are the versions that go along with the church we attend.

  4. New Living Translation is good.

  5. King James version.  The "Evangelical" in Germany is the US version of Protestant.

If you want to spend a bit more money, there are bibles bound in wood (really nice) that are available.  I have seen them advertised, but don't have website.

    Congrats on your wedding.

  6. its not about which religion you are. its about which bible is a correct translation. read the forward in the bible before you purchase to see if any thing has been omitted or changed. if so i would steer clear of that translation/publisher.

  7. niv new international version

  8. Though there are almost 7000 versions of this book, the King James version, supported by Oral Roberts Ministry would be one that your friend would find effective in returning to the Path.

  9. Well, first I would try to find out if he would welcome such a gift. especially if you don't know how religious he is (a lot of Europeans are not or don't put much into it these days). In that case  I would not buy a bible but something else that shows your appreciation.  Maybe a photoalbum with wedding pictures?

  10. I just took a Biblical Lit class at school and the Bible we had was the New Living Translation Study Bible. It is an excellent Bible for anyone to have. It not only gives a timeline of events that occurs in the Bible but also bios of important people in the Bible and is very easy to understand. Because it is a study Bible, it gives explanations to all verses in the Bible. You should check into it; it's really good.
