What are the rules regarding calling your shots in billiards? Specifically, what is the penalty if you do not put the ball you name in the pocket you name?

  1. Call shots is league and barroom Im not going there

The rule is call pocket on a good hit .The only penalty is your turn at the table is over. a bad hit is a ball in hand foul

  2. In 9 ball you never call anything. In straight pool (14.1 continuous) you must call every shot. In 8 ball, BCA rules make concessions for call shot or no call shot, so it's up to the players or tournament/league director. Whether or not you must call your shot in bar leagues can vary.

In all games where you are required to call your shots, you only need to call the pocket and the ball going in. You never need to call banks, caroms, or combo shots.

If you make a legal shot, but the ball you call misses or goes into a pocket other than the one called, you just lose your turn.

  3. Well unless its obvious you should always say what pocket you are going to shoot a ball into.  Some barroom rules or players will say you have to call every shot.  Don't play with these people because it will only decrease your pool knowledge.  As far as a penalty you would just loose your turn at the table, unless you are playing ball in had rules and didn't get a good hit, then its a foul.  Keep rack'n em up!!

  4. Pro rules are call pocket only
