You know I have played every kingdom hearts game except those final mix Japanese versions. the First one has a bit more challenging than Kingdom Hearts two, but It was still a whole lot of fun, because it was the beginning of the story and you play through all those worlds and unfold the story, Bottom line this game was really good. The next game that came out was Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories and that was a good game and all, but it wasn't oh my gosh c**p your pants good, it was just good. If you're like me and want to know the whole story of Kingdom Hearts then you are gonna want to get this game because if you play KH and then go straight to KH2 then you are going to be very confused on where the story is picking up from. Next Is KH2, this game was by far the best game of all, I mean when it first came out I wanted it so bad and I was right to be so excited. the Game play was great, the story, a little confusing, but still fun to go through and learn the story, the world Variety was better because there were a lot of places you could in both versions but in 2 there were more things to those previous worlds. and the new world choices were really good I enjoyed going through the pirates of the Caribbean world also known as port royale and the World from Tron also known as Space Paranoids. So to get right down to it Kingdom Hearts 2 was a great great game. Now for Kingdom Hearts 3 there actually is no kingdom hearts 3 but later on there will be three Hand held games. There will be KH coded for mobile cell phone or something. Then there will be Kingdom Hearts 356/2 days for the Nintendo DS. and last will be Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep for the Sony PSP.

But to give you a direct answer I think you should get Kingdom Hearts 2.

Well, Kingdom Hearts 3 hasn't even been announced (unless you're talking about the GBA spin-off which wasn't very good), and to understand the story of Kingdom Hearts 2, you'd want to play Kingdom Hearts 1 which just happens to be the best one. ;)

I liked both one and two. One had a great story and was difficult, but fun.

Two was great too. The graphics were flat out spectacular, and I loved the fact that the plot for each world was similar to the movie. I also liked the triangle commands which provided new strategies for battles. Except it was too easy (after you beat stupid Demyx in Hollow Bastion. It took me forever to beat him)
