  1. maybe Mirepoix(in Ariège)

  2. I think it is very likely that it was a "one off" themed event as there appears to be no record of this in traditional folklore in the Pyrenees. There was an identical event in the glorious English village of Lacock in Wiltshire in early spring this year, with displays of large home made puppets which were displayed for a fortnight all round the village. They were everywhere: on roofs, in shop windows, outside pubs, in  front gardens and ranged from historical figures to fairytale characters, and people went round with a list, gave marks, and voted for those which they considered as best. The logistics behind such displays prevent them to be kept for any length of time so it is very likely that it will be impossible to find exactly where it was, unless it is a yearly event for a local festival.

You could try approaching the Offices du Tourisme  or the Syndicats d' Initiative, but it will be very time consuming as the region extends from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean.

I have looked at all the  books which I have on the area, as I went there last year, but I could find nothing at all on the subject.
