Swimming is supposed to exercise many parts of the body. Is there any health/fitness benefit that WALKING has which swimming does not? Can you name a health/fitness advantage of walking which can't be achieved so well by swimming?

  1. sometimes musid helps you go faster but you cant stick your iPod in and swim

  2. yes, just as the other person said, swimming doesn't strengthen your bones. so even if you swim a lot, walking will help you with bone building, so don't give up walking. on the other hand, swimming could add so many benefits that's hard to get from walking.

  3. Like the first person said, walking helps with bone density. Also, if you walk its a lot easier to have an iPod or other MP3 player with you. They make special underwater cases and other waterproof mp3 players, but that'll cost a little more, obviously.

Walking will primarily work your legs, thighs, and hips, while swimming will work your shoulders and lats.

Really, when it comes down to it, there is little difference in forms of exercise for your heart. As long as it is continuous and rigorous, its all the same health benefits. It's simply a matter of which you prefer. I grew up on a swim team, so I prefer to swim. I have also invested in a underwater MP3 player to make the time go by easier.

The only difference you will get is which muscles are worked, and whether you prefer being isolated in water, or out walking in the park. I prefer both. So, there is little advantage either way. Just make sure you get in a minimum of 30 minutes and its comfortable for you, and it doesn't really matter specifically what you do.

  4. Swimming is not a weight-bearing exercise. For all the good that it does, it will not help you maintain bone density. Walking, however, can.
