Question:

What wall color goes well with a purple couch?

I have just recently moved into a small studio with a loft, and I am looking for a color that will work with my purple couch and gold pillows. The coouch is an old antique and it is beautiful... the color is dark purple with medium brown legs and molding? My living area is very small and I have an open kitchen.... I want a color that will be easy to work with yet, not too dark so it doesn't feel like it is making my place smaller. I know yellow looks good but is there any color I can use with purple and gold? My bathroom, which is also located downstairs, is a beach theme and I was going to go with a light silver/gray... THanks for your help!

  1. light green will look great

  2. I have a burgundy couch and painted the wall behind it an Aztec Gold.  The gold really made the couch 'pop', Not sure how that would look with purple though. How about going to the paint store and getting samples the color of your couch and then hold it up to the other paint chips to see what it might look like. If you prefer not to paint, get a couple of pictures with yellow in them. Good Luck

  3. i was thinking the same colors that lucia had said. ive noticed alot of people of using the beige/sandy color and it really goes with everything! from modern to traditional decorations

  4. Some may think I am nuts. but a pale olive or mocha really look good with purple IMO

  5. A pale golden sand color on the walls/ ceiling would look lovely with the purple/ gold while not competing with them.  Use a medium/ dark brown in the same tone as the wood work for accent, and creamy white for the trim.  It would flow nicely into the beach-themed bathroom!

  6. maybe a light tanish color or lavender color.

  7. i'd go with a beige or a sandy color. just add some painting with some gold in it. if u want 2 make it interesting try a beige or sandy color with gold tint in it! it will bring out the gold pillow more!

    i hope i helped!

  8. Sounds like you have a purple couch.... gold pillows.... and pecan wood tones in the room.

The gold and purple always look good together.

However...realize that the gold pillows are an accent color and should be used SPARINGLY.  If you put too many gold accessories in the room it will start to look tacky and overdone.

Gold and purples remind me of looking up through the trees at a beautiful sunset.  That is why my suggestions will go down the path of a more 'natural' theme.

I suggest you go with another color for the walls.  Go with a light green... a very pale light green.  The green should just be a 'hint' of color on the walls.  You want the couch to stand out against the pale green walls.

On one wall, (the accent wall) ... use a medium brown.  Not dark...not light.....just a medium brown.

Then for the rest of your accessories ....use some big colorful vases with long twigs standing up in the corner.  Add some green plants in the room to add some life.

Add some art to the walls that consist of the light green, purples, browns, and golds.  (Save some of the paint that you used on the walls and make your own art.)

To make your own art.... just go to a resale shop and buy some matching frames that you like.  Take the picture out.  Now ...go buy some posterboard and cut it to fit in the frame.  Paint your own picture on it.  It can be just a few random lines with the colors you need....or a cool design.....or if your more talented get really artistic with it.

For the window treatments .... use some long sheers that will be very 'flowy'.  Use a cornice at the top of the window that goes all the way to the ceiling.  Hang the sheers behind it and make them stretch all the way to the floor.  This will make a window appear to be very grand and big.  Do not let the sheer window treatments touch the floor... just barely skimming the floor is okay.

Add river rocks to small bowls and insert small plants in the center in their own little pots.  This will add to the 'natural' relaxing theme of the room.  You could swap out the little plants for a large candle as well.

    Good luck with your room.

  9. I was going to suggest grey or even beige.  I don't care for yellow and purple.  It was never a good combo for me, personally.  You could go with maybe a grey with a hint of other color blended in as well.  See if you can take some samples home with you and then try to choose.
