  2. He freed the slaves.  

  3. Perhaps the only contribution he made was to free the slaves, a first step toward all men becoming equal under the law.  They did not become fully equal until many years later with desegregation of schools in the 1950's, unrestricted right to vote (elimination of poll taxes and literacy barriers) in the 60's under Lyndon Johnson, etc.

  4. While he made plenty of positive contributions to the US as a whole, none of them really dealt with democracy.
