My dad said that they only made a 7% profit and I find that hard to believe. I've looked online and I'm not sure I'm finding the actual percentage of the profit that they made when it was like 11 billion in profit. I think that was the last quarter. Any help along with sites that I can refer to, would be appreciated. Thanks so much.

  1. He's not far off.  8.7% net profit margin.  (11680M / 133776M)  Pre-tax profit margin was 16.8%.

For what it's worth there's many large corporations that operate with significantly higher margins.

  2. Your dad underestimated but not by much.  They had an 8.5% return on sales for the most recent quarter.  Not bad, but not as good as many other companies.

  3. I bristle when people say other companies operate at a higher profit margin, to justify the profits the oil companies are earning.  I frankly don't care if the peanut butter makers are making a 20% profit margin, or Kraft food is hauling in even more.  I DON'T have to buy their products.

But through mergers & acquisitions, all viable competition for selling gasoline has been eliminated.  And I can't stop buying gas as I have a 95 mile daily commute to work & back.  But when one company raises the tank wagon price on gas, the rest follow in lock step.

The consumer is getting hosed & has no choice but to pay.
