  1. Saigon

  2. sagion

  3. siegon

  4. Gia Dinh, then Sai Gon and now Hochiminh City

  5. I believe it was called Saigon.

  6. It was Sai gon until 1975 when the North Vietnamese Communists took control of South Vietnam and renamed it Ho chi Minh City after their Leader of the same name. However, they had a hard time making the new name stick but communists being a stubborn lot, they just officially changed distinct 1 back to Sai Gon and so really the city now has two names. It's Ho Chi Minh City and Sai Gon.

The name Sai Gon evolved from Sai Con Con in the 1700's. I've read that it was originally Prei Kor (Kapok Tree Forest) a Khmer name. Which would make sense as the area HCM City now sits in was probably part of Campachina or what we now call Cambodia.
