Question:

What was I feeling ? ?

I have a top heavy SUV and I drive it pretty fast all the time. I was going through a two lane S shaped road at about 60 which is what I normally do and slow down to about 45 for the really sharp curves. Today I did that and felt the overwhelming sense that my car was going to tip to the side. So much that I went entirely into the other lane to try to get it even feeling. It was very scary, I never felt something like that before.

Could my vehicle actually tip over? What was I feeling? What happens if I do take a curve too fast?

I've learned my lesson about speeding. No more.

  1. It's important to keep proper air pressure in YOUR tires especially, since you are top heavy, low tires could cause it to roll over sooner.

  2. You absolutely can tip it over. The government agency that tests crash results also tests SUVs for their ability to handle swerving without tipping. All SUVs have to pass an acceptable rating before being put into production. However you can still tip one over.

  3. very simply.......yes it could roll over.....

  4. yes it could tip over, but depending on the curve 45 is probably ok (unless it's marked 15 mph).  i had the same feeling in my SUV, like it was going to slip off the road, like it wasn't stable, like if i went faster i'd fall over........ it was my shocks.  they needed replaced.  you can have them checked at most "lube" type places or at Midas, Hibdon's, Tires Plus or another chain auto shop and changing shocks is easy and routine.  i don't know what else it could be off the top of my head, but i do know my feeling just kinda showed up one day, and i just thought i was going too fast.  can't hurt to have it checked.
