Ok, so I was riding today and got my horse to do this thing at the canter where I turned down center line and got him to move away from my (outside) leg.(So his leading leg was the one he was movin to) We have no mirrors, but I felt him moving sideways, if not crossing behind, then atleast moving sideways. Kinda like a leg yeild, I think.

So is there a name for this or was I doing some other movement incorrectly?

  1. Well i ride western and we can make the horse walk or canter sideways like that too but we call it a side pass

  2. Sounds like you were doing a leg yield. Congrats!!!

  3. Leg yields and congrats!!

  4. you were just moving side ways because in both the leg yeild and half pass the legs cross.

  5. side stepping?

thats what i heard its called

  6. Sounds like leg yeilds!

  7. sounds like a dressage leg yield or a half pass!

  8. You could have been doing a vague half-pass at the canter. A half-pass at the canter is when the horse moves sideways towards a point and has his whole body bent to the direction he is traveling to. You were probably doing a vague half-pass, and by vague I mean that you and your horse have the concept of moving sideways in the canter, but you guys haven't reached the point of fine tuning the movement for competition. I wish I could get my horse to half-pass in the canter, or even get close to doing something like that!

  9. Sounds like a leg yield to me.

  10. mmm sounds like a leg yield. Good for you i tried getting my old horse to do leh yields but he wasnt the dressage type lol!
