Is it even possible to say, with Nicklaus having achieved so much, so often?

You're never going to get complete agreement on a question like this, but many would say that 1972 was Nicklaus' best ever season. He had seven PGA Tour wins, finished second three times and was in the Top 10 in 14 out of the 19 tournaments he took part in. He also won The Masters and the US Open in 1972, and his quest for the Grand Slam was only halted by Lee Trevino at the British Open, where Jack finished one stroke back in second place. He was named Player of the Year and led in scoring and money. He tied Bobby Jones this year with his 13th major (including amateur majors).
