Wiki -- One of the most important figures of late antiquity, Justinian's rule constitutes a distinct epoch in the history of the Byzantine Empire. The impact of his administration extended far beyond the boundaries of his time and empire. Justinian's reign is marked by the ambitious but ultimately failed renovatio imperii, or "restoration of the empire".[3] This ambition was expressed in the partial recovery of the territories of the Western Roman Empire, including the city of Rome itself. A still more resonant aspect of his legacy was the uniform rewriting of Roman law, the Corpus Juris Civilis, which is still the basis of civil law in many modern states. His reign also marked a blossoming of Byzantine culture, and his building program yielded such masterpieces as the church of Hagia Sophia, which was to be the center of Eastern Orthodox Christianity for many centuries.

  2. One of Justinian's most lasting achievements was the creation of the Corpus Juris Civilis:

this was the ultimate codification of Roman Law, in which form is was passed down to later generations and to Western Europe, where it remains the basis of law today.

In religious affairs Justinian always advocated orthodoxy; under Justin I he was personally responsible for ending the Acacian schism and the restoration of good relations with the pope.He also wanted to take back the west from Barbarian rule;many Catholic landowners wanted a return to Roman rule.
