Of course he was religious. At least, he believed everybody should believe in him (and allah, of course).

He set up a religious mixture of what was known to him: ancient Arab gods/tradtions mixed with the Torah (a lot) and the New Testament (here and there) with a lot he fantasized himself.

He was nothing new. Just a s great conman following a tradition. Later conartists were Joseph Smith (Mormons) Charles Russell (Jehova's Witness) or Ron Hubbard (Scientology). To name a few succesful others who followed his ideas.
