  2. 3:58.8, beating the man who took the record from him, John Landy, at 3:59.6, in a race called the "Miracle Mile," at the Empire and Commonwealth Games in Vancouver in 1954, about three months after Bannister became the first to break the four-minute mark.  Bannister soon retired to concentrate on his medical studies.

    He competed in the Olympics in 1952, but ran fifth and fourth in the 1500 meters (known as "the metric mile"), and retired before he could compete in 1956.

    The current record is 3:43.13 by Moroccan runner Hicham El Guerrouj, set on July 7, 1999 at the World Championships in Rome.  The current women's world record was set 12 years ago today, August 14, 1996: 4:12.56 by Svetlana Masterkova of Russia.

  3. He was famous for being the first to go under 4 minutes in the mile.

    He had a personal best of 3:48.4 minutes.
