  1. Brigantines were made of wood. and were popular in the 19th century. The sails were made of canvas. They were 100-130' in  length, 20-25' in  beam, and drew 6-15' of water. They were a popular type of cargo ship, used mostly by Americans, Englishmen, Danes, Spaniards, and Frenchmen. It was constructed in the same way as other ships in this period.
