Your questin is confusing - earliest what?  When steam locomotives were developed, they were able to pull several cars at the same time, thus the term "train" came into use.  Before that, a car was pulled by a horse or team of horses.  It wasn't until the invention of the "Iron Horse" that more than one car was used.  Except for tourist railroads, locomotives today are powered by electric and diesel motors.
